The concept of a man taking pleasure in putting on a pair of stockings seems laughable, pitiful – and plain sinister.   In India, crossdressing has been an old practice. Crossdressing, or the act of wearing clothes that are not typically associated with the wearer’s gender, is seen in art forms like dance, music and theatre. It is seen as artistry by some, and as a way of expression and pleasure by others. Art forms like drag, too, involve persons expressing themselves through crossdressing. It is also an integral part of many queer and transgender persons’ experience with transitioning, figuring out and expressing their gender and sexuality.  Shinde, who came out as a transgender woman last week and is currently undergoing surgery, says she hopes she has given people the strength to make choices that require courage. It took the coronavirus-induced lockdown for fashion designer Swapnil Shinde to realise that he had to do something to accept himself the same way as he wanted everybody else to. For years he had led life as a gay man, not embracing his real identity. He was a transgender person – a woman trapped in a man’s body. Shinde, 39, who is now to be called Saisha, had an intense nine months of introspection while being stuck alone at home. Single-sex theatrical troupes often have some performers who cross-dress to play roles written for members of the opposite sex (travesti and trouser roles). Cross-dressing, particularly the depiction of males wearing dresses, is often used for comic effect onstage and on-screen. Drag is a special form of performance art based on the act of cross-dressing. A drag queen is usually a male-assigned person who performs as an exaggeratedly feminine character, in heightened costuming sometimes consisting of a showy dress, high-heeled shoes, obvious make-up, and wig. A drag queen may imitate famous female film or pop-music stars. A faux queen is a female-assigned person employing the same techniques.
