cross-dressing in bollywood

You might love watching Shah Rukh Khan as the King of romance or Salman Khan's swag as the macho hero but well, there have been times when these superstars, too, have gone out of their way to cross-dress as women on-screen. After all, in Bollywood, role reversal is as much a plot necessity as a gimmick and these bunch of actors didn't shy away from dressing as a woman to get into the skin of their characters. It only proves their openness and boldness to accept a character without judging on the basis of gender.

So without further ado, scroll down to see how Bollywood's male actors looked when they played a female character on-screen. The list includes Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Ayushmann Khurrana, Riteish Deshmukh, Saif Ali Khan, and Shahid Kapoor among others.

When Bollywood male-actors dressed as females on-screen

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan cross-dressed as a woman in 1998 film Duplicate. The actor wore a shimmery black dress but his screen presence wasn’t amusing in any way. It was actually terrifying as the scene required SRK to seduce a man only to kill him later.

Ayushmann Khurrana

Ayushmann is known for pushing the boundaries with every next film of his. In the 2019 film Dream Girl, he essayed the role of a guy impersonating as a female tele-caller and was much appreciated for his role-reversal. He not only dressed as a woman in some of the scenes, but he also modulated his voice with a seductive female tone.

Salman Khan

Salman Khan cross-dressed as a woman in his 2006 romantic-drama film Jaan-E-Mann. Well, he definitely looked like a woman you never want to mess with!

Aamir Khan

In 1995 film Baazi, Aamir pulled off cross-dressing with much finesse for one of the songs. It's believed that Aamir had spent hours in make-up on each of the eight days it took to shoot the song. He even waxed!!

Ajay Devgn

In one of the many hilarious scenes from Golmaal Returns, Ajay along with Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor had cross-dressed as a woman. Ajay had his macho side on display even when he slipped into that floral gown.

Amitabh Bachchan

Talking about men cross-dressing on-screen, how can we not include Amitabh Bachchan, who had worn a lehenga-choli for his iconic song Mere Angne Mein from Laawaris?

Saif Ali Khan

This is a still from Sajid Khan’s 2014 romantic comedy film Humshakals! Saif, along with Ram Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh had dressed as a woman for not one but multiple scenes. Our favourite out of the three has to be Saif looking absolutely gorgeous in his feminine avatar.

Kamal Haasan

Kamal Haasan’s iconic portrayal of Chachi 420 in the 1997 comedy-drama movie has been immortalised in the history of Indian cinema. Not only was it a tale of a man who embarks upon an unusual journey to regain his wife’s lost love and trust, but is also therapeutically funny.

Riteish Deshmukh

Riteish Deshmukh has played female characters in several films. In 2006 film Apna Sapna Money Money, he had an elaborate portrayal and let's just say how effortlessly he adapted to the feminine side. His expressions, his style, his walk, his smile...Riteish indeed made for a hilariously beautiful woman in the film.

Shahid Kapoor

Last but not the least, here's Shahid dressed up as a woman in his 2010 romantic drama movie Milenge Milenge, co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan. It was a brief scene, more situational than funny

Crossdress in theatres

Single-sex theatrical troupes often have some performers who cross-dress to play roles written for members of the opposite sex (travesti and trouser roles). Cross-dressing, particularly the depiction of males wearing dresses, is often used for comic effect onstage and on-screen. Drag is a special form of performance art based on the act of cross-dressing. A drag queen is usually a male-assigned person who performs as an exaggeratedly feminine character, in heightened costuming sometimes consisting of a showy dress, high-heeled shoes, obvious make-up, and wig. A drag queen may imitate famous female film or pop-music stars. A faux queen is a female-assigned person employing the same techniques. A drag king is a counterpart of the drag queen - a female-assigned person who adopts a masculine persona in performance or imitates a male film or pop-music star. Some female-assigned people undergoing gender reassignment therapy also self-identify as drag kings although this use of "drag kin...
